A United States Senator is murdered on the floor of the Senate by an invisible assassin; a French nobleman in Jerusalem during the First Crusades gives rise to a new order, the Knights Templar; a creature of dark mythology becomes the power behind the Third Reich. Three supposedly unrelated events weaving their way through the corridors of time as if by no reason or rhyme. But what if all these moments were connected through the incredible exploits of one man? An immortal man destined to battle evil throughout the ages!

From Munich to the hills of San Francisco and a speeding midnight train across the badlands of Utah, pulpsmiths Ron Fortier and Andrew Salmon unleash an incredible adventure pitting America's secret defenders, the GHOST SQUAD, on their first thrill-a-minute mission. Led by the man who cannot die, they must battle the most sophisticated spy nework ever conceived, the BLACK LEGION! At stake- the life of one of the country's most beloved heroes and the fighting spirit of an entire nation.

With a pulp renaissance underway interested readers can find quality reprints of classics in addition to the wave of writers producing retro-style adventures. Of these "Ghost Squad: Rise of the Black Legion" by Ron Fortier and Andrew Salmon ranks among the best. In fact, I enjoyed this book so much I'll be crushed if they don't write a sequel. The premise: At the onset of World War II Lazarus (yes, THAT Lazarus of Bethany) joins forces with an adventurer named Alan Hale, a magician named Arlene Kane, and professor Andreas Vantassel to fight an evil group known as The Black Legion. Fortier and Salmon have created immediately likeable characters. The plot - which I won't describe in detail because you need to buy the book - is ingenious, and best of all the action and pacing are relentless. There are some fantastic action scenes in Ghost Squad, and each chapter propels the story toward its inevitable conclusion. The final line is chilling. While many writers are concentrating on reviving existing characters from the golden age of pulps, Fortier and Salmon have scored a bulls eye with original characters on their first action-packed mission. The interior illustrations are by Rob Davis and the cover is by Chad Hardin. This is now my favorite Airship 27 book. For more information visit the Airship 27 website. Kudos!

Ghost Squad Rise of the Black Legion edition by Andrew Salmon Ron Fortier Rob Davis Chad Hardin Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I'll be honest with you -- I almost didn't buy this book. I've enjoyed Ron Fortier's other works but this concept just didn't sound all that great to me. I'm glad I took a chance on it. I believe that most of the writing was done by Andrew Salmon but it's hard to say -- it didn't feel all that much like Fortier in the style, though the plotting did feel like a Fortier book. The plot is classic pulp and I loved the villains -- and I found all three of the main characters very interesting, even Lady Arcane, whom I didn't care for her in her previous non-Ghost Squad appearance. John Lazarus, in particular, was very well presented. The action sequences get a little long-winded in the second half of the book but this was great fun and I can't wait to the next installment!
In the grand tradition of of movie seials and Indiana Jones,Ghost Squad delivers action from beginning to end. Ron Fortier and Andrew Salmon deliver an exciting new entry in the New Pulp movement. Lazarus of Bethany from the Bible is the hero of this tale. The immmortal adventurer assembles a team to combat the Black Legion of the Nazis led by the Master. I won't reveal the Master's identity as not to spoil this revelation at the end. Hopefully there will be a sequel.
(warning minor spoilers below)

I love all things pulp, so I knew I was probably going to like this book. Still, I wasn't prepared for exactly how much promise this book's premise has.

The concept of this book can almost be described as "Highlander meets Hellboy" a team of uniquely skilled agents is assembled to fight an ageless and evil organization that is working within the Third Reich during WWII. The agents include a brilliant scientist, a two-fisted pilot, and a beautiful red-headed mystic and magician. Their leader, though, is somewhat special John Lazarus is immortal and cannot die, and the name is no coincidence... he truly is Lazarus, whom Jesus brought back from the dead as chronicled in the Bible.

The villains of the Black Legion are dastardly and use super-science as their weapon, most effectively in the form of invisible assassins (one scene in particular was particularly chilling). One scene showing their leader in action was especially stunning and we only learn at the very end of his true nature. This big reveal sets the stage for a promising series... I'm hoping there'll be more to follow.

The writing is clean and full of heart and love for the pulp era, and it was fun to see a certain G-Man from the pulps make a guest appearance. There is a chase-scene through the streets of San Francisco that is very long but nonetheless exciting (I actually let out a big breath when it ended), but opinions may differ on this scene. In other books, this scene could have been the climactic center-piece, but here it's just a bump in the road... all in a day's work for the Ghost Squad.
